Bear Witness- The Lie of the Land- A film by Jill Impey and Andrew Howe exploring the story and landscape of the Battle of Cinderloo, Shropshire’s Peterloo, which took place almost 200 years ago in Old Park, Dawley.
Participate worked in partnership with community group Cinderloo 1821 to raise awareness of the Cinderloo Uprising, an industrial protest which took place over 200 years ago in Old Park, Dawley, Telford. The project brought together history, contemporary responses, writings and artwork and received support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Historic England, Ironbridge Gorge Museums Trust and several local public partners.
Participate creative practitioners Jill Impey, Andrew Howe and Jean Atkin led the following activities:
- public events including walks and collage workshops, supporting heritage skills, local history and family history research
- developing a schools education programme to deliver projects with 8 primary schools in Telford, working with over 700 students and partners including former miners the Granville Boys, local historians and Ironbridge Gorge Museums Trust
- published resources in support of the education programme
- creating StoryMaps and a downloadable self-guided art walking guide
- produced a film Bear Witness: The Lie of the Land. This explored the Cinderloo story and changes in the landscape of Telford using responses gathered from several different voices of local people, poets and specialists in ecology, local history and industrial heritage
In working with schools, Participate was able to tailor projects to suit the particular requirements of the school, which could cover the following subjects:
- local and or national history,
- science and industry, especially mining,
- geography, geology and landscape,
- creative writing/art/film or
- topics around social justice, crime and punishment and British values.
