Jean Atkin

I am a poet, writer and educator based in Shrewsbury. My latest collection, High Nowhere (IDP, 2023) was nominated for the Laurel Prize for nature and environmental poetry. My poetry has been commissioned, anthologised, widely published and featured on BBC Radio 4. I was a winner in the 2025 Coast to Coast to Coast Individual Poet Journal Prize, and a forthcoming collaboration about writing and walking will be published in 2026 by Black Cat Press. My practice is closely connected to place and nature, to how people connect with place and our awareness of time and lives passing. Over the last 15 years I have worked on many collaborations and residencies, making poetry with people of all ages and backgrounds and working with both local and national organisations including English Heritage, the National Trust, Scottish Botanic Gardens, Meadow Arts, Writing West Midlands and Creative Scotland.
